Piled up questions

Sorry to be so ineffective a resource lately.  I’ve been … umm … occupied. These are all from Betsy. She’s great, she has lots of questions.

whats presbyterian mean or how is it different?
–It’s just a branch of Christianity. I’m sure there are a LOAD of VASTLY important and TERRIBLY debatable theological stands they have taken that make every other kind of Christianity just pale in comparison to their amazing brand of Truth-filled religion, but I can’t sort out all the protestant faiths, and there’s really no point because almost nobody(if anybody) really practices them. There’s a lot in the New Testament that teaches the destructive power of factioning, telling people you are of one brand or another of the same family. It’s like picking siblings you will share a last name with. If you can find a presbyterian, look at them, watch them, get to know them. That is a presbyterian.

How do i delete stupid applications off of my iphone?
–Get a G1! Just kidding, but not really. You should have read the manual. If you didn’t, you should just type “how to delete applications off my iphone” into google and you’d get this video!

Would it be rude to ask my room mate to get up when her alarm goes off instead of pressing snooze for an hour and a half, when my half of the room is incredibly messy and she never says anything?
–I don’t know about rude, but it seems a fair trade.  she’s noisy in the mornings, you leave a mess.  Forgive her!  Cameron did the same thing to me, with that Sarah Barielles song overandoverandover.

you know all those commercials on right now where they ask a lot of questions? some are the actual people asking and some are people on other peoples’s backs asking the questions for them? i have no idea what its advertising but you should answer them.
–IT’S ADVERTISING THE GOOGLE G1!!! IT’S AMAAAAZING!!!!! Amazing because of what it is, what it can be, and what it is built on. It runs Android, and the first and vastly overdue open-source mobile operating system. To put it easily, you know those phones that run Windows Mobile, or how the iPhone runs OSX? Well, this runs Android. Android, unlike Windows or OSX, is Open-Source, meaning the code can be seen and edited by anyone, and is not centered around privacy and profit-farming exclusivity. It will grow as a product because people everywhere can contribute, and everyone will benefit.
Plus it’s freaking amazing. I can go on for days. I want one so bad I can taste it.

how come sometimes people cut off all the leaves on their trees and just leave stubs.
–It reduces the energy a plant can absorb, and sends it into dormancy…for winter! Or a drought. But Winter is much more exciting.

These are questions from my spammers. Needless to say, they aren’t very inventive.

Can you snort Vicodin?
Yes, you can snort anything your nose will accept, provided you can inhale. It’s not safe, though, because Vicodin is Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen, but mostly Acetaminophen…Tylenol. It can kill you when combined with alcohol, which often is consumed as parties involving recreational drugs, because, let’s face it, drinking a whole bottle of Jagermeister is nothing compared to snorting coke or shooting heroin. Also, Hydrocodone is addictive, and Acetaminophen causes liver failure. So does alcohol. All in all, it’s a stupid idea.

can you take Naltrexone with Ultram(Tramadol)?
–Naltrexone is a drug used to block opiod receptors in your nervous system(used to prevent addictive urges), and Tramadol is a mild opiate pain reliever. Taking the two can cause withdrawal symptoms(which suck bad enough that a lot of people will ruin their lives, compromise their sexuality, destroy their families, and kill people to prevent them) or seizures. So don’t.

Can you buy Xanax without a prescription?
–Yes. In Mexico, from nefarious high school kids, online, or from people who have both too many drugs and what lawyers and salesmen call “a moral vacuum”.

Spam spam spam.

Wordpress and Spam.

I have hundreds of dozens in my inbox every day that are spam for drugs and animal porn.  It’s discouraging.

Very discouraging.

Update!

So I went to the store yesterday, and bought a battery charger for our camera, so we can take baby-forming(re:NOT baby-making) pictures, and I can compare the size of our fish in the future! I snagged a coupon off another charger too, and it was super cheap!

I have begun, but not completed, watching The Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. I wish it was as easy for me to find great books as it is to find great movies. NETFLIX FOR BOOKS, WHERE ARE YOUUUUU?!!

My aquariums are at a really cool point. Our living room Goldfish tank is setup for good, and looking mighty fine, and I am hoping to keep those goldfish for YEARS. I mean, like decades. I also found that what my ten gallon was missing was a snail–just a regular ol Apple Snail, but man. I started getting interested in fish out of my desire to have a huge reef just like in Hospitals and Restaurants, but have since then owned Guppies, a Beta, an Apple Snail, Goldfish, a Pleco…it seems I am starting small.

A word on that.

When I was a kid, my brother got into Skateboarding and somehow managed to get a Powell Mini-Logo skateboard. I liked riding around ok, but never really got into trick skating. I was in USA Boxing for years and years, with excellent training, but ultimately, I liked being in shape, but hated boxing. Every other kid who I later knew in life to be good at something started with CRAP. Like riding on roller skate wheels and fenceboards crap. Like Tandy Computing crap. Like beating on trash can lids crap. I eventually got into playing guitar, with low-end, easy-to-afford gear, and wound up being able to hold my own in a couple bands.

I think that having good equipment might actually make you suck! So I’m not heartbroken about my “beginner” tanks. I’m considering finding time to volunteer at True Percula to get some knowledge and help out a real gem of a local business!

In other news, I checked out a “Life change scale” and even though it states that a score over 200 will lead to stress-related illness, I scored a 411. Please, nobody die.

Surprise!

On November 4, 2008, I got home from a long drive, and well into the evening, after settling in for a bit, I received a huge surprise–the biggest, most positive and encouraging surprise in a long time–and I think those of you who have an idea of what kind of level I am talking are quite surprised too!

I speak, of course, of when I found out my 75 gallon tank is actually 110 gallons! That’s like, over half a ton of fishtank when you put water, substrate, filter, lights, and fish in it. The possibilities of such a size of tank are near limitless within reason of home fishkeeping. I haven’t decided what to put in it, but it will be a while before I do. I have a 50 gallon I will be playing with in the near future, to make a nice bedroom accent.

I think with the 20 gallon, I am going to leave on the 30-60 gal filter(that Jef’s folks game me with the 110) on it, as I now have a Whisper brand filter at least double the size of every one of my tanks on every tank in my house. But I’d like to get substrate for it, some Kuhli Loaches, keep Bahz(the pleco) in it, and grow plants, with no lid, and encourage the duckweed to grow. That’d be a really pretty living room accent.

I’m also entertaining thoughts of using the 5 gallon filter on my 1 gallon, and putting something cool in it, whatever my wife fancies. The local fish store here is really really really really sweet! It’s called True Percula, and it’s worth every penny!

I love having a hobby.

Screw Elections, fish are like, at least a million times better.

Do you think I should major in art or something else?
Aarron

I think you should only major in art if you are trying to broaden your horizons, get pushed to use new media, learn about art history, and can make your money without your degree. An art degree won’t get you anywhere, but talent most certainly will. I think if you are more interested in knowing about Art and the ins and outs and origins of visual art, an art degree is for you.

“if they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of rightousness, than to have known it and then to turn their back on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: “a dog returns to its vomit” and “a sow that is washed goes back to her wallowing in the mud” 2 peter 2:20-22
How come i keep finding these discouraging passages? it makes me think its okay to not believe it all.

This was a huge point of contention within myself for years. There is an answer. The reason you find discouraging passages is because you are having trouble processing them into your understanding of the Gospel. One reason could be, honestly, because you aren’t praying for guidance and understanding before you read–I do notice a HUGE difference between when I pray and read scripture and when I just read it. This passage is simply Peter musing that “to have never loved at all is better to have loved and lost”–to know the mind of God, to know righteousness and joy, and turn from it, is such an everlasting pain and regret than to never fully appreciate what you turned down.

I spent years wondering if the whole Bible was true. I couldn’t process all the passages about Hell, the nature of God’s Kingdom, Christ’s factual assertions, and commandments against doing some things. I realized that more than anything, they were distractions. Distractions, because they didn’t apply to me. I am not a glutton, I am not trying to wrangle my way into Hell, and I am not going to murder someone for pride’s sake. So without addressing them, I simply focused on what things were relevant to me, and I realized how deeply I had let my spiritual life stagnate and my faults and defects grow, so busy was I worrying about hypothetical situations.

Today, I will fully tell you that I believe 100% of the entire Bible is true, without reservation. Anything I feel I “disagree” with, or don’t accept, I understand that its just something I don’t yet understand. It took me years to understand the passage about how one must learn to hate their own lives to know the Gospel of Life. I am not sure I can really put it into words.

Halloween!

It’s still Halloween. It’s not really Halloween till dark, and stays Halloween all night!

I watched An American Werewolf in London and The Thing! The Thing was great, with very freakish concepts. AAWIL was alright, a bit too much old-school “boobies and bloodshed”. I am very impressed with the special effects though!

First pumpkin I’ve ever carved, I carved last night! It turned out pretty sweet. I love Halloween, its my favorite holiday, next to Real Christmas. Here’s why!
-The weather cools down…FINALLY
-Kids are happy and excited to get free candy
-Imagination is promoted with decorations, costumes, etc
-Community is built by having traditions that involve strangers
-Its the only night-time holiday
-Its cheap! If Halloween stuff is too pricey, people won’t buy it!
-I LOVE PUMPKIN!!! Eatin em, lookin at em, eatin em, carving em, eatin em, toasting seeds, eatin em…love em.

Ok this was my quick Halloween post, I have to retire, my sleepy head wife wakes up in like, 3 hours.

what causes red-eye in photos?
ChRiS

Light! Light from the flash bounces through the pupil and off the back of it(called the fundus). Why are you using flash anyways? I think it makes for unrealistic photos.
